I recently started doing pilates for something a bit different to my normal exercise routine. I pretty much do a daily HIIT (high impact interval training) that really gets my heart pumping in a very short space of time. Picture ‘thirty second waves of intensity’ and you’re on the right track. You’ll also find me doing some simple yoga poses to stretch and condition on my off-days, but I didn’t realise that my core wasn’t benefiting enough from all that I was doing. On occasion, I had walked past a pilates machine (that scary piece of equipment that resembles a turn-of-the-century torture chamber) sceptical about its effectiveness but never bothering to try it out – until just recently that is.

I started out with the equivalent of ‘pilates for dummies’, not really sure if I was going to be the dummy or dumb-ie, but keeping an open mind for the sake of being the fittest I possibly could. So, what did I learn? To slow down, a lot really, and to take note of the fine adjustments that activate deep muscle groups that I honestly didn’t even know I had.

To be Frank, I was missing out on deep tissue muscle conditioning that I can now easily access through basic pilates. Don’t worry folks, you don’t even need to use one of these scary looking machines try it out for yourself. A solid pilates session on the floor will have you taking note of things you may have missed in your regular fitness routine. Things like pivoting your pelvis to work the inner core; or moving at a tenth speed during a workout can make a mile of difference in the way you sit, walk, stand, and feel day to day. I suppose the machines can elevate an awareness of active muscle groups, so for a lady like myself, I found the whole experience fascinating.

Perhaps this was my queue to reconsider how I approach everything I do in life? When it comes to exercise, diversity is pretty great.
